Baseball’s Matson Earns Cape Cod Baseball League’s Most Outstanding Relief Pitcher Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball rising junior and right-handed pitcher Sean Matson earned the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Most Outstanding Relief Pitcher Award after a summer in which he did not allow a run and posted five saves for the Orleans Firebirds.
 
A member of the Orleans Firebirds this summer, Matson did not allowed a run during the regular season over 16 appearances and 21.2 innings. Over the course of the regular season, he posted a 0.00 ERA, 6-0 record, five saves, and 26 strikeouts while allowing just 11 hits and three walks.
 
Over his two years thus far at Harvard, Matson has posted a 5.14 career ERA, throwing 103.1 innings and posting 108 strikeouts against 37 walks. Last season he made 13 appearances with 11 starts on the year, throwing 61.0 innings with 59 strikeouts and a 5.02 ERA. He lowered his ERA to 2.84 during conference play in 2023. In his first season in 2022, Matson made 13 appearances and six starts as a pitcher, posting a 5.31 ERA, 3-3 record, and 49 strikeouts over 42.1 innings on the season.
 
This past spring the Crimson gained a berth in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament in 2023, securing the No. 2 seed behind a 15-6 Ivy League record, marking Harvard’s most Ivy League wins since 2005. The Crimson captured six of its seven Ivy League series during the regular season.
