Feller Homers, Baseball Falls to Holy Cross in Mid-Week Contest, 17-7


WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Sawyer Feller hit his second home run of the season, and senior Chris Snopek and sophomore Callan Fang each tallied three hits, but Harvard University baseball fell to Holy Cross, 17-7, in eight innings on Wednesday night at Fitton Field.
 
Playing in its first game in the New England region this season, the Crimson (3-14) held an early 3-1 lead and remained within 6-4 through four innings and 11-7 in the middle of the eighth before the Crusaders (9-15) held on for the decision.
 
Feller finished the game with two RBIs alongside his solo shot in the fourth. Snopek went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Fang posted a 3-for-5 effort with an RBI. Sophomore Max Lane posted a two-run double, and senior Ben Rounds worked two walks and has reached base safely in all 17 games this season. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior catcher Sawyer Feller hit his second home run of the season and sixth of his career. He closed the game with two RBIs, two walks, and a run scored.
  • Senior first baseman Chris Snopek went 3-for-4 with an RBI, run, and a walk. He notched three hits in a game for the second time this year.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Callan Fang finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run.
  • Sophomore outfielder Max Lane notched a double and two RBIs.
  • Senior outfielder Ben Rounds worked two walks and scored a run. He has reached base safely in all 17 games this season.
  • Junior second baseman George Cooper and first-year shortstop Jack Rickheim each compiled two walks and a run.
  • Senior third baseman Jake Berger added a hit and an RBI, and senior outfielder Peter Messervy tacked on a hit, run, and walk.
  • First-year right-hander Andrew Abler threw 2.0 innings in the start, allowing one run on no hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
  • Sophomore left-hander Brian Dowling tallied a career-high five strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
  • Harvard totaled 10 hits in the contest, marking its seventh game this season with double-figure hits.
  • The Crimson worked a season-high 10 walks as an offensive lineup. 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. After Feller worked a walk with the bases loaded to bring home a run, Lane capped the scoring with a two-run double to center field.
  • The Crusaders pulled within 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the second and took a 6-3 lead with five runs in the last of the third.
  • Feller hit a solo home run to right center in the top of the fourth to pull Harvard within 6-4.
  • Holy Cross tacked on two runs on an error in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 8-4 and added three runs in the last of the seventh to make the score 11-4.
  • Harvard trimmed the lead to 11-7 with three runs in the top of the eighth behind a sacrifice fly from Berger, an RBI single from Snopek, and an RBI single from Fang.
  • The hosts plated six runs in the eighth to close the game at 17-7.
