Baseball Competes in Pair of Narrow Setbacks against Penn State in Doubleheader, 5-3, 8-7


CARY, N.C. – Harvard University baseball battled the Big Ten’s Penn State University in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, dropping a narrow 5-3 decision in game one before falling in 10 innings in game two, 8-7.
 
The Crimson (1-7) held a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth in game one prior to falling to the Nittany Lions (9-4) in the opener and gained a 4-2 lead in the fifth in game two and rallied from a 7-4 deficit to force extra innings before the designated home team took the nightcap.
 
In game one, senior Peter Messervy led the Crimson with two RBIs, first-year Dominic Brancel posted an RBI in his first career at bat, and senior Ben Rounds hit safely for the seventh straight game to open the year. Junior right-hander Sean Matson threw 5.1 innings in the start allowing two runs and two hits with seven strikeouts while junior right-hander Cole Cleary tossed 1.2 innings in relief, permitting no runs on no hits.
 
In game two, junior Matt Giberti went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and two stolen bases, Rounds extended his hitting streak to eight games to open the year and finished with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, and junior George Cooper tallied two hits, an RBI, and a run. In relief, first-year right-hander Truman Pauley tossed 3.0 innings and allowed just one run, and fellow first-year right-hander Will Burns threw 2.1 innings and permitted one unearned run on no hits with three strikeouts.
 
Friday became a doubleheader in the series after officials moved the set’s contest originally scheduled for Saturday to Friday due to weather. 

GAME 1: Penn State 5, Harvard 3

Senior Peter Messervy hit a two-run single to give Harvard a lead in the sixth, and first-year Dominic Brancel added an RBI double in the ninth, but Harvard fell to Penn State in game one, 5-3, on Friday afternoon.
 
The Crimson took a 2-0 lead in the sixth behind Messervy’s pair of RBIs before the Nittany Lions scored twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh before holding off a ninth-inning rally from Harvard.
 
Messervy led the Crimson with his two RBIs, Brancel posted an RBI in his first career at bat, and senior Ben Rounds hit safely for the seventh straight game to open the year. Junior right-hander Sean Matson threw 5.1 innings in the start allowing two runs and two hits with seven strikeouts while junior right-hander Cole Cleary tossed 1.2 innings in relief, permitting no runs on no hits.

How It Happened

  • Matson kept the Nittany Lions off the board through the first five frames, racking up six strikeouts over that period.
  • The Crimson took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth off a two-run single from Messervy. After Rounds and Berger each worked walks and first-year Tyler Shulman was hit by a pitch, Messervy sent a single to right field to score both Rounds and Berger.
  • Penn State tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI double and RBI single.
  • The Nittany Lions took a 5-2 edge with three runs in the last of the seventh, including a two-run double.
  • Harvard cut the margin to 5-3 in the top of the ninth as Brancel came on as a pinch hitter and laced a double down the left field line to plate Feller before Penn State closed the contest. 

GAME 2: Penn State 8, Harvard 7 (10 Innings) 

The Crimson tallied 11 hits and had six different student-athletes provide RBIs before Harvard fell to Penn State in 10 innings in game two, 8-7, on Friday evening.
 
The Crimson held a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning and rallied from a 7-4 deficit with three runs to force extra innings before the Nittany Lions – the designated home team – took the nightcap.

  • In his first collegiate start, sophomore left-hander Brian Dowling threw 4.1 innings, allowing six runs – five earned – on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.
  • First-year right-hander Truman Pauley tossed 3.0 innings in relief, giving up one earned run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.
  • First-year right-hander Will Burns hurled 2.1 innings in relief, permitting one unearned run on no hits and one walk with three strikeouts. 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson struck first in the opening frame. After Giberti led off the inning with a double to right field, he later came home on an RBI from Rounds to put Harvard up 1-0.
  • Penn State tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as a run came home following a throwing error.
  • Harvard re-gained a 3-1 advantage with two runs in the top of the fourth. Rounds led off the inning with a double before Lybrook brought him home with an RBI single. Lane later worked a walk with the bases loaded to force home a run.
  • The Nittany Lions trimmed the margin to 3-2 in the last of the fourth following an infield single.
  • The Crimson pushed its lead back to two runs at 4-2 with a run in the top of the fifth. With two outs in the stanza, Berger and Snopek each singled to put runners on first and third before Shulman sent an RBI single to left to plate Berger.
  • Penn State tallied five runs in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead, 7-4, in a frame that included a two-run home run.
  • Harvard whittled the margin back to two runs at 7-5 in the top of the sixth as an RBI single from Cooper plated Giberti after Giberti set the table with a two-out double to right center.
  • The Crimson rallied to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the ninth. After Cooper singled and Rounds walked to start the inning, Cooper came home on an error to plate the frame’s first run. Snopek then brought Rounds home with an RBI on a groundout to knot the score.
  • Penn State took the decision in the bottom of the 10th as a run came home following an error.
