PRINCETON – The Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks will face off in the 2023 World Series, starting on Friday.
Why is this important for Princeton?
Well, the general managers of each team are Princeton alums.
Mike Hazen ’98 has helped turn around the Diamondbacks from a 52-win team in 2021 to the National League representative in the World Series in 2023. Arizona rallied from a 2-0 and 3-2 series deficit to the Philadelphia Phillies, winning the last two games of the NLCS on the road. Ketel Marte was named the NLCS MVP after hitting .387 with a .581 slugging percentage.
At Princeton, Hazen was a two-time first-team All-Ivy League honoree and two-year team captain who had a career batting average of .333, twice earning the team’s William J. Clarke Award as the team’s most outstanding player.
After losing 102 games in 2021 and 94 contests in 2022, Chris Young ’02 helped the Rangers to a World Series berth in 2023. Like the Diamondbacks, the Rangers won two games on the road, earning victories in games six and seven of the ALCS to become the American League representative. Adolis Garcia was the ALCS MVP, bashing five home runs and collecting a 1.293 OPS.
During his Princeton career, Young was named the 1999 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and pitched to the lowest ERA in the conference in consecutive years (1999, 2000). He finished with a 9-1 record overall and a 1.64 ERA. Batters hit just .153 against him and had just 13 extra base hits. He also Ivy Rookie of the Year and first-team All-Ivy as a sophomore in basketball.
