Women’s Basketball Earns First Win of the 2022-23 Slate at Home


ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell women’s basketball tallied its first win of the season with a 62-60 victory over Lafayette on Wednesday, November 16. The Big Red were led in scoring by senior captain, Ania McNicholas, who tallied 12 points in the contest.

The Big Red opened the scoring on the evening with a big three pointer by senior Shannon Mulroy. The Leopards had two answers, including a three ball of their own to take a 5-3 lead, but senior Anna Hovis knotted the game a five with a jumper. Mulroy was sent to the free throw line lass than a minute later to give Cornell the 6-5 lead, but a Lafayette jumper give the Leopards a 7-6 lead. Lafayette closed on a 12-7 run to hold a 19-13 lead on the quarter.

The Big Red battled in the second, but the Leopard held on to a five point lead at half, 31-26, rebuilding after holding just a one-point advantage at 20-19.

Coming out of the break, the Big Red immediately began clawing away that the Leopards lead. A 9-0 Cornell run brought the Big Red to a 35-31 lead for the first time since the first quarter. 38-38 was the one tie score during the third, but Cornell continued to push on, concluding the quarter with a 46-44 lead despite a 6-0 Leopard run.

Cornell never gave up its lead in the fourth, even pulling away by as many as eight. Lafayette put together a lat 5-0 run to bring the game within two with 31 seconds remaining, but the Big Red defensive effort held strong, closing the game 62-60 in favor of Cornell.
