Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Yale, 17-1, 9-2
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Harvard University baseball dropped a doubleheader to Yale University, 17-1 and 9-2, on Saturday afternoon and evening at George H.W. Bush Field in the second and third games of a three-game series.
After the Crimson (2-18, 1-5 Ivy) took the series opener on Friday, 6-3, at O’Donnell Field in Cambridge, the Bulldogs (15-7, 3-3 Ivy) claimed both games of Saturday’s twin bill to capture the series.
In game one, sophomore Ryan Mooney posted a hit and an RBI, and junior Gio Colasante tallied a hit and a run. Sophomore right-hander Andrew Abler threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, and first-year left-hander Charley Bergsma tossed a season-high 5.1 innings in relief.
In game two, sophomore Jack Rickheim went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and two walks while Colasante threw 3.2 innings in the start allowing two runs with a career-high five strikeouts in addition to notching a hit and a walk at the plate.
Officials moved games two and three of the series from Cambridge to New Haven due to weather conditions, but the Crimson remained the home team in the batting order for all three games of the set.
GAME 1: Yale 17, Harvard 1
Harvard fell to Yale, 17-1 in the day’s first game and the second game of the series to set up a rubber match in the series finale.
The Bulldogs scored eight runs over the first two frames to gain separation from the Crimson.

How It Happened
- The Bulldogs opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first.
- Yale moved the margin to 8-0 behind five runs in the top of the second.
- The designated visitors tacked on an additional run in the fourth to make the score, 9-0, another run in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead, and one more run in the sixth to move ahead, 11-0.
- The Crimson plated its first run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth as a ground ball from Mooney brought home Colasante to bring the score to 11-1.
- Yale scored twice in the seventh to gain a 13-1 edge and plated four runs in the ninth to bring the score to 17-1.

GAME 2: Yale 9, Harvard 2
Sophomore Jack RIckheim went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, but Harvard fell to Yale, 9-2, in the second game of the day and the series finale.
The Crimson remained within 3-1 through five innings before the Bulldogs scored the game’s next six runs to move ahead 9-1 on the way to taking the decision.
Rickheim added a run and two walks to his two hits and RBI while junior Gio Colasante threw 3.2 innings in the start allowing two runs with a career-high five strikeouts in addition to notching a hit and a walk at the plate.

How It Happened
- Yale started the contest’s scoring with one run in the top of the first.
- The Crimson knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Rickheim sent an RBI single to right center to plate Shulman.
- The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth with another run.
- Harvard threatened in the bottom of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with two outs before the Bulldogs escaped the jam.
- The designated visitors moved ahead 5-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
- Yale tallied three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-1 advantage.
- The Crimson pressured the Bulldogs again in the last of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with two outs before Yale closed the frame.
- The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the eighth to move the difference to 9-1.
- Harvard threatened once more in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs prior to Yale recording the stanza’s final out.
- Rickheim came home to score following a ground ball from senior George Cooper in the bottom of the ninth for the contest’s final run.
