Cornell Sprint Football is Back Home
ITHACA, N.Y. — The Big Red sprint football team will be looking to break its two game losing streak and stay undefeated on home turf on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4:00 p.m. when it faces off against Penn on Schoellkopf Field.
Cornell enters this match-up 1-2. The Big Red started off its season with a win over Molloy at home and then traveled to Navy and Chestnut Hill where it lost both games.
Cornell is coming off of a 9-27 loss to Chestnut Hill. Max Spero went 9-for-23 for 100 yards and one interception in the match-up. Evan Nicholas led the team in rushing with 15 attempts and a net 31 yards and Colin Boyle led in receiving with two catches for 51 yards.
The Big Red’s lone touchdown came from the defense when Zach Glenn recovered a fumble and returned it 78 yards to the end-zone. Cornell also had a field goal in the game as Stephen Cisz was good from 26 yards.
The defensive side of the ball was the bright spot for Cornell in this loss. The Big Red recorded five tackles for loss, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, one of which resulted in the lone touchdown.
Chestnut Hill outscored Cornell 27-3 in the first half, but with some halftime adjustments, the Big Red was able to limit the Griffins offense in the second half to zero points and outscored them 6-0.
Penn is entering this match-up 2-0 and coming off of a bye week from games. The Quakers opened their season with wins against St. Thomas Aquinas and Mansfield.
Penn’s last time out was back on Friday, Sept. 27 against Mansfield. The Quakers came out with a 24-13 victory on the night.
Quarterback Michael Malone went 11 for 20 for 152 yards, one touchdown and one sack and running back JT Goodman scored his first two rushing touchdowns of the year to lead Penn in the victory.
The Big Red and the Quakers have met 103 times over the course of the last 86 years. Cornell is currently leading the series 57-46. At Schoellkopf field the Big Red also leads the series 31-21. Cornell has an average of 16.92 points against Penn over their 103 meetings.
While overall Cornell is leading the match-up history, the Big Red are currently on a ten game losing streak to the Quakers. The last time Cornell defeated Penn was on September 14, 2012 when the Big Red won 42-34 in a six overtime game on Schoellkopf Field.
The last time these two teams met up was in September 2023 in Philadelphia and the Quakers defeated the Big Red 21-9. Penn limited the Cornell offense to 120 yards while the Big Red limited the Quakers offense to 263. The lone Cornell touchdown came from a 27 yard pass from Cooper Wise to Marco Hernandez and the Cornell defense had two interceptions in the game, both coming from Jaden Queen. None of the big players in last year’s match-up are returners for the Big Red. On Penn’s side, returner JT Goodman scored twice and returner Tom Rebstock scored once in the last match-up between these two teams. All of the Penn touchdowns came from one yard punch-ins.
