Daniel Ties Cornell NCAA Era Single-Season Assist Record, #6 Big Red Defeats Stonehill 7-1 in NCAA Tournament Opening Round
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Cornell women’s ice hockey team defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks 7-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Class of 1965 Arena on Thursday night. Cornell will advance to the regional championship game against the no. 3-ranked Colgate Raiders.
Gabbie Rud, Grace Dwyer, Alyssa Regalado, Rory Guilday (two), Izzy Daniel and Mckenna Van Gelder scored Big Red goals in the contest. Claudia Yu, Daniel (three), Kaitlin Jockims, Sarah MacEachern (two), Lily Delianedis, Regalado, and Karel Prefontaine logged assists in the game.
The majority of the opening period was spent on the Cornell offensive zone, as the Big Red would out-shoot the Skyhawks 17-3 in the frame. Stonehill had some respectable opportunities on goal, but would not find the back of the net. Although Cornell had a strong period offensively, they would find the back of the net just once when Rud skated around the Skyhawk defenders and put the puck past Eva Stone.
The second period would see six goals between the two squads, with five of those going Cornell’s way. It would be Stonehill who would score five minutes into the frame to knot the game up at 1-1.
Seconds after the Skyhawks goal the Big Red would draw a penalty that Dwyer would cash in on, to move the score to 2-1. From there, Cornell would rattle off five unanswered goals, coming from Regalado, Guilday (two), and Daniel, to take a 7-1 victory over Stonehill. On the seventh goal, Daniel’s assist would tie the Cornell NCAA Era record at 38, sitting her and Brianne Jenner ’15 at the top of the Big Red record-books.
Annelies Bergmann finished the game with 11 saves. She collected her 20th win of the season.
