NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Princeton Baseball Team took both games of the doubleheader over the Yale Bulldogs highlighted by a combined no-hitter and complete game shutout from Tom Chmielewski.
Princeton 8, Yale 0
Matt Scannell led off the game with a home run and followed with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Carlos Abello’s two-run double in the third inning extended Princeton’s advantage to four before Kyle Vinci scored on a passed ball, making it 5-0.
Chmielewski retired nine straight hitters after an error in the first inning. After another error to begin the fifth stanza, the junior pitcher got a pop up and double play.
Brendan Cumming tacked on to the Tigers’ advantage with a two-run single in the top of the sixth. A bases loaded walk from Kyle Vinci finished the scoring for the Tigers.
Yale’s Alec Atkinson broke up Chmielewski’s no-hit bid on a one-out single in the next half frame.
How did the Princeton ace react?
He picked off Atkinson.
The home team got a runner to third base in the eighth stanza, but a flyout ended the threat. Chmielewski saved his best for last, striking out the side in the ninth inning including the final two looking for his ninth and 10th punchouts of the game.
It was the third complete game and second shutout of the season for Chmielewski as he lowered his ERA to 2.93.
Cumming finished with three hits as did Noah Granet.

The Tigers broke through with a four-spot in the top of the fourth. Nick DiPietrantonio ripped a two-out two-run double down the left field line before Caden Shapiro traded spots with DiPietrantonio on a run-scoring double. Granet brought in Shapiro to complete the scoring in that at-bat for Princeton.
Two more RBI groundouts for the Tigers made it 6-0 in the sixth. The Bulldogs led off their half of the sixth with a hit-by-pitch, marking their first base runner since the first inning. A walk and stolen base eventually led to a sacrifice fly to get the home team on the board.
An error, sacrifice fly and RBI knock by Matt Scannell produced three runs for Princeton in the top of the seventh.
After two walks in the seventh, Jacob Faulkner came in for Jackson Emus and got a flyout to finish off the threat. Faulkner went 1-2-3 in the eighth, adding two strikeouts while Justin Kim wrapped up the no-hitter with a 1-2-3 ninth highlighted by a strikeout to end it.
It’s the first no-hitter for Princeton since April of 2008 (Steven Miller) and the 15th in program history.
Emus had his best outing of the season with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. The trio of Emus, Faulkner and Kim combined for 12 strikeouts. Their battery mate, Jake Bold, had a team-best three hits and scored twice in the win.
With a win on Monday, Princeton will clinch a spot in the Ivy League Tournament. First pitch vs. Yale on Monday is set for 12 p.m.
