Baseball Dropped in Sunday Tripleheader Against Penn
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton was defeated in a rare Ivy League triple header against Penn. The Tigers lost game one, which was suspended on Saturday, May 14 in the top of the sixth inning, 10-8. Princeton was dropped in game two, 9-0, and lost game three, 7-3.
Brendan Cumming tied the single-season program record with his 66th hit of the season in game one. He broke that record with a single to left center in game three, putting himself above Daniel Arendas (1995), Thomas Hage (1996), and Patrick Boran (2001).
Nadir Lewis ended his season on a strong note. The slugger went 6-for-12 with three doubles, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored against Penn. Carlos Abello and Matt Scannell also chipped in a couple RBI each in today’s tripleheader, while Cumming, Eric Marasheski, Nick DiPietrantonio, and Noah Granet each tallied one.
Game One
The Quakers opened the game with five runs on an infield error and a pair of home runs in the top of the first.
Penn extended the lead to 6-0 in the second frame before a fielding error, which most likely occurred due to heavy downpour, allowed Princeton to plate a run. Carlos Abello then hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-3 ballgame. As stated earlier, Penn extended its lead to 7-3 just before the game was suspended.
The Quakers took advantage of a bases-loaded situation when game one resumed on Sunday with three more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 10-3
Princeton slowly chipped away at the deficit in the final three and a half innings. DiPietrantonio started the rally with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the sixth. A three spot in the bottom of the seventh, with runs driven in by Cumming, Granet, and Lewis cutting the deficit to 10-7. Lewis drove in another run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Tigers were unable to rally further as the Quakers held on for a 10-8 victory.
Game Two
Penn opened the scoring once again with a pair of two-out RBI knocks in the top of the third. A lone run in each of the fifth and sixth innings extended the visitor’s lead to 4-0.
The Quakers capped off three consecutive scoring innings with five runs in the seventh to secure a 9-0 victory.
Game Three
For the third time today, Penn opened the scoring. After a pair of Quaker runs in the top of the first, Lewis halved the deficit with a solo shot to right field. Penn restored its two-run advantage in the second inning with a sac fly.
Penn extended that lead in the top of the fourth, but a two-run bomb by Scannell brought the Tigers within arm’s reach once again with the Quakers lead cut to 4-3.
The Quakers all but sealed the victory in the top of the eighth with three runs to take a 7-3 victory.
