Baseball Suffers Defeat to No. 23 Mississippi State

Starkville, Miss. — Despite a leadoff home run from Brendan Cumming, Princeton was defeated by No. 23 Mississippi State, 11-2.

Princeton’s top two hitters through the season’s first two weekends continued their hot hitting streaks in Starkville. Brendan Cumming went 3-for-4 with a double and a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning. Nadir Lewis went 2-for-4 with a double and boasts a .500 batting average through nine games this season.

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board. Leading off in the top of the first, Cumming got all of an inside pitch and pulled it over the wall in left field for an early, 1-0 lead.

However, Mississippi State was quick to bounce back, as a three-run home run in the bottom of the first became the catalyst for a run of seven unanswered as the hosts took a 7-1 lead into through five frames.

Princeton pulled one back in the top of the sixth, with Noah Granet doubling off the wall in right field to drive in Matt Scannell, but the Bulldogs answered once again with four consecutive runs to seal an 11-2 victory.
