Baseball Hosts Cornell in Three-Game Ivy Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball hosts Cornell University in a three-game Ivy League series at O’Donnell Field with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 19 starting at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 20 at noon (ESPN+) with the Crimson set to host the fan-friendly Cambridge Day as part of Saturday’s doubleheader.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (6-21, 3-8 Ivy) will meet the Big Red (10-14, 5-7 Ivy) to close out a six-game homestand at O’Donnell Field. Harvard enters the matchup coming off a 19-4 victory over Stonehill (Apr. 15) in its mid-week matchup.
  • Harvard is set to host Cambridge Day on Apr. 19. The fan-friendly event is set to bring the Cambridge community together for a day of celebration with giveaways, food trucks, local vendors, and yard games.
  • Harvard’s weekend rotation is set to feature RHP Callan Fang (1-3, 3.63 ERA) in game one, RHP Truman Pauley (2-5, 5.63 ERA) in game two, and a to-be-determined pitcher in game three. Cornell is set to counter with RHP Carson Mayfield (1-1, 3.92 ERA) in game one, LHP Huxley Holcombe (3-1, 8.34 ERA) in game two, and a to-be-determined pitcher in game three.
  • Harvard leads Cornell in the all-time series, 114-59. The two teams first met in 1887.
  • Since March 25, Harvard has posted a 6-5 record with the Crimson hitting .297 as a team. Six members of the Crimson have hit above .300 during that span including senior George Cooper (.390), junior Gio Colasante (.385), sophomore Tyler Shulman (.368), sophomore Jack Rickheim (.341), senior Matt Giberti (.318), and sophomore Ryan Mooney (.313).
  • Junior infielder and right-handed pitcher Gio Colasante earned a spot on the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List on Apr. 16. Through games on Apr. 16, Colasante posted a .312 average with 16 runs, 29 hits, 16 RBIs, five doubles, and four home runs as a hitter. As a pitcher, he notched a 2.53 ERA during conference play with 12 strikeouts over 10.2 innings through games as of Apr. 16.
  • Seniors George Cooper and Matt Giberti, junior Jordan Kang, sophomore Tyler Shulman, and first-year Liam Wilson each hit a home run as Harvard powered its way to a 19-4 win over Stonehill College (Apr. 15). As a team, the Crimson set season highs in runs (19), hits (18), RBIs (17), home runs (five), and doubles (four).
  • Sophomore right-hander Truman Pauley captured Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 15 after carrying a no-hitter into the ninth inning in the win in game two against Princeton (Apr. 11), throwing a career-high 8.1 innings and permitting two runs – both unearned – on one hit and three walks with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Pauley tallied a 0.00 ERA, held the Tigers to a .038 opponent batting average, and came within two outs of the Crimson’s first no-hitter since 2018.
  • Junior Gio Colasante earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors on Apr. 7 after making major contributions at the plate (.625 average, 10-for-16, nine RBIs, two homers), on the mound (0.00 ERA, 5.0 innings), and in the field (1.000 fielding percentage on 24 chances) in the Crimson’s contests against UMass (Apr. 1) and Dartmouth (Apr. 4-6).
  • Senior Peter Levin has earned selection as a nominee for the Allstate NACDA Spring Good Works Team through his time volunteering at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. Levin has volunteered in post-operative patient transport, assisted nurses with patient care, provided support for long-term patients, and helped with day-to-day needs on the post-operative floor, including directing families around the hospital.
  • Junior Gio Colasante – a member of the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List – has hit .395 in Ivy League play with 17 hits, three doubles, eight RBIs, and two home runs. In conference play, he ranks fifth in average (.395), fifth in hits (17), fifth in slugging (.605), sixth in total bases (26), and eighth in OBP (.447). Overall, for the year, he has hit .312 with 29 hits, 16 runs, 16 RBIs, five doubles, and four homers. He ranks 10th in the conference in slugging (.516) For the Dartmouth series (Apr. 4-6), he went 7-for-12 (.583) with two doubles, a homer, and five RBIs as a hitter, while tossing five shutout innings as a pitcher to help him earn Ivy League Player of the Week (Apr. 7). He hit 7-for-15 (.467) in the Penn series (Mar. 22-23) with multi-hit games in all three contests.
  • Senior outfielder/infielder George Cooper has tallied a team-best .320 batting average alongside 32 hits, 15 runs, five doubles, a team-best five home runs, and a team-best 21 RBIs on the year. Cooper ranks ninth in the league in hitting (.320) and ninth in slugging (.540). He hit homers in three straight games from Mar. 23-28. Cooper posted a 3-for-4 effort with a two-run homer in the win over Holy Cross (Mar. 25). In the series opener against Northeastern (Mar. 14), he went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double.
  • Senior outfielder Matt Giberti has notched a .314 batting average, 27 hits, a team-best 19 runs, and a 10-for-12 effort in stolen bases. He ranks fourth in the Ivy League in stolen bases (10) and fifth in triples (two). In Ivy only play, he has hit .318 with 14 hits, eight runs, and four RBIs. In the win over Stonehill (Apr. 15), he went 3-for-5 with his first collegiate home run.
  • Sophomore Jack Rickheim has contributed a .283 average with 26 hits, nine RBIs, 15 runs scored, and four doubles. In Ivy play, he has hit .268 with 11 hits and six runs. He notched the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the eighth in the 14-13 win over Holy Cross (Mar. 25).
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Callan Fang has tallied a 3.63 ERA with 29 strikeouts over 34.2 innings on the year. Fang stands third in the league in ERA (3.63) and seventh in opponents’ batting average (.260). In Ivy only play, he ranks first in the conference in innings pitched (28.0) and fourth in strikeouts (24). He tossed 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts in the win over Yale (Mar. 28) and hurled a career-high 8.0 innings with one run allowed vs. Princeton (Apr. 11). Fang won the 2024 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year award and the 2023 Ivy League Rookie of the Year award.
  • Sophomore right-hander Truman Pauley has tallied 50 strikeouts over 40.0 innings pitched on the year. In the Ivy League, he ranks first in games started (eight), second in strikeouts (50), second in opponents’ batting average (.191), ninth in innings pitched (40.0), and 10th in ERA (5.62). In Ivy only play, he stands second in strikeouts (28) and fourth in opponents’ batting average (.169). He brought a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Princeton (Apr. 11), tossing a career-high 8.1 innings with a career-best 12 strikeouts to earn Ivy League Pitcher of the Week (Apr. 15). Pauley tossed 6.0 innings in the win at Dartmouth (Apr. 4), allowing no earned runs with six strikeouts. He threw 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts, while allowing two runs at Northeastern (Mar. 15).
  • Fenway Park will host this year’s Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday, April 29. The college baseball doubleheader will feature Harvard and Northeastern in the championship game at 7:00 p.m. following the third-place matchup between Boston College and Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m. Fenway Park has hosted the tournament 24 times since it began in 1990, including most recently in 2019. Harvard has won five Beanpot titles all-time including in 1991, 1998 (co), 2005, 2014, and 2018.
