Levin Homers, Baseball Falls to No. 7 Florida in Doubleheader, 7-0, 22-6


GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Senior Peter Levin hit his first career home run, but Harvard University baseball fell in a doubleheader to No. 7 Florida, 7-0 and 22-6, on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Condron Family Ballpark.
 
Closing a stretch of eight straight games against Power Four conference opponents, the Crimson (0-9) pulled within 7-5 in the series finale before the host Gators (15-2) gained separation in the day’s second game following a shutout in the day’s opener.
 
In game two, Levin hit his first collegiate homer with a blast to left field, sophomore Jack Rickheim hit an RBI triple into the right center gap, and first-year Liam Wilson hit a two-run double into left field. Senior William Lybrook went 2-for-4 in the game as the Crimson tallied nine hits.
 
In game one, junior left-hander Brian Dowling and sophomore right-hander Andrew Abler combined to allow just one run over 3.0 innings of relief.
 
Due to expected inclement weather on Sunday, the two teams revised the series to become two seven-inning games on Saturday. Saturday’s contests were delayed slightly due to weather conditions.

GAME 1: No. 7 Florida 7, Harvard 0

 
Junior left-hander Brian Dowling and sophomore right-hander Andrew Abler combined to allow one run over 3.0 innings of relief, but Harvard fell to No. 7 Florida, 7-0, in the day’s first game.
 
The Crimson allowed just one run after the second inning following an opening two frames in which the Gators plated six runs.
 
Dowling tossed 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with one strikeout before Abler hurled 0.1 scoreless innings.

The Crimson pulled within 7-5 behind three runs in the top of the fourth before the Gators scored 15 of the contest’s final 16 runs.
 
Levin hit his first career homer, Rickheim notched an RBI triple, and first-year Liam Wilson posted a two-run double. Senior William Lybrook went 2-for-4 as the Crimson tied a season high with nine hits as a team.

  • Harvard took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Wilson sent a two-run double into left field.
  • Florida pulled ahead 3-2 with three runs in the bottom of the first and took a 7-2 lead with four runs in the last of the third.
  • The Crimson responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to pull within 7-5. Rickheim brought in the frame’s first run with an RBI triple into the right center gap before Cooper brought in a run with an RBI single to right field. Shulman closed the stanza’s scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Giberti.
  • The Gators then scored five runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to move ahead 16-5.
  • Levin blasted a solo home run out to left field – his first career homer – to make the difference 16-6 in the top of the sixth.
  • The hosts scored six times in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Harvard plays its first games in New England this season with a three-game series at Northeastern University from Mar. 15-16 (FloCollege) with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 11:30 a.m. and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts.
