Joey Wallace, a Purdue professor of biomedical engineering and associate vice president for research development in Indianapolis, explains how bones are impacted by falls and why older people should be especially careful during winter weather. Wallace says the elderly are more vulnerable to bone fractures from falling for a number of different reasons. Younger bodies are designed to prevent and repair damage done to bones. As people age, the soft tissues in their bodies aren’t able to absorb as much energy from an impact, leading to higher rates of bone failure in the elderly.
