Baseball Completes 3.2 Run for Ben in Support of Ben Abercrombie ’25
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball completed the 3.2 Run for Ben on Thursday afternoon at the Gordon Indoor Track in support of Ben Abercrombie ’25 – who suffered a severe injury while playing for the Crimson’s football team in 2017 – with proceeds supporting the Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Endowment Fund.
Abercrombie is on track to graduate from Harvard this spring – a testament to his courage, resiliency, and support system.
The 5th Annual 3.2 for Ben – a virtual run/walk – began on Nov. 16 and runs through Nov. 28. The Harvard Varsity Club will also host Ben Abercrombie Day at El Jefe’s on Dec. 10 in support of the fund. All proceeds from El Jefe’s from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Dec. 10 support the fund.
The Harvard Varsity Club (HVC), with support from the Department of Harvard Athletics and Friends of Harvard Football, established the Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Endowment Fund in September 2017 to provide support to the Abercrombie family and any future Harvard undergraduate student-athlete who incurs a severe or catastrophic injury while competing for the Crimson while enrolled in Harvard College.
The fund is named in honor of Ben Abercrombie, who suffered a serious cervical injury while making his Harvard football debut against the University of Rhode Island on September 16, 2017.
In March 2024, the Harvard Varsity Club upgraded the Abercrombie Fund from a current-use fund to an endowment fund, investing donations alongside the Club’s general endowment. The Benson M. Abercrombie ’21 Endowment Fund will now provide a source of support to Abercrombie and any others in need in perpetuity.
A heralded recruit out of Hoover, Alabama, Abercrombie had risen on the depth chart in the defensive backfield throughout preseason training camp. He was a two-sport star in football and baseball at Hoover High School, helping the Buccaneers win Alabama 7A State Championships in both sports (football in 2014 & 2016, baseball in 2017). Following his senior year on the gridiron he was selected to the All-State first team.
