Kirst To Represent Red, White, and Blue at Men’s Box World Championship
SPARKS, Md. — Cornell men’s lacrosse senior CJ Kirst has been named one of 26 individuals (23 active players, three alternates) to represent the United States in the World Lacrosse Box Championships set for Sept. 20-29 in Utica, N.Y. Team USA will battle it out against 28 other men’s teams from across the globe for the title of World Champions.
“We couldn’t be more excited about the prospects for this group,” said head coach Regy Thorpe, who has previously played and coached for the U.S. in this championship. “The U.S. player pool has grown every year and that made for some really difficult decisions, especially for those last few roster spots. We’ve had great teams in the past, but haven’t had the depth position wise. This year, especially in the defensive and transition areas of the field, it was really deep and competitive. We love this group of guys.”
The Big Red’s leading scorer the past two seasons will look to help the US go for gold after finishing with a bronze in the past five box world championships. Kirst becomes just the second Cornellian to compete on behalf of Team USA at the Box Lacrosse World Championships since 2015, joining the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse, Connor Buczek ’15, who took the field as a player while serving as an assistant on East Hill in 2019.
Kirst is not the only athlete with Big Red ties to this year’s world championship. While other rosters still have yet to be announced, Jeff Teat ’21 was named to Team Canada. Since the tournament’s inception in 2003, at least one Cornellian has competed in the quadrennial games on behalf of four different countries.
