Taylor Knibb’s Anchor Leg Lifts U.S. To Silver In Triathlon Mixed Relay
PARIS, France — Taking over the anchor leg in fifth place, Taylor Knibb ’20 brought the United States all the way to the front of the pack and claimed silver in the triathlon mixed relay on Monday morning at the 2024 Olympic Games. It is Knibb’s second silver in the event, having been part of the team that claimed a medal in 2020.
Knibb’s leg was the fastest of any athlete in the final stretch and helped the U.S. to a time of 1:25.40, just .005 ahead of Great Britain and a second behind Germany. Great Britain, which won gold in 2020, led most of the race, but Knibb’s strong swim and bike legs actually put the U.S. into the lead in the final stretch momentarily. When the final results were read on site, initially Team USA was announced as winning bronze, but review moved Knibb and her teammates up one spot.
It is the second medal for a Cornellian in the 2024 Olympics after Michael Grady ’19 earned gold in rowing in the men’s four last week. Kyle Dake ’13 remains the lone remaining competitor for Cornell, opening competition in wrestling on Friday, August 9.
Incredible effort from Taylor Knibb to record the fastest split out of EVERY athlete on the final leg!
