Baseball’s Bigge ’20 Joins Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO – Harvard University baseball alumnus and right-handed pitcher Hunter Bigge ’20 has earned a call up to join Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs, the Cubs organization announced on Sunday.

Bigge – who has spent his entire professional career in the Cubs organization – joins Brent Suter ’12 as one of two active Crimson alumni in Major League Baseball. Suter made his MLB debut in 2016 and currently pitches for the Cincinnati Reds.

Pitching with the Iowa Cubs at the AAA level this season, Bigge has posted a 0.77 ERA, 1-0 record, six saves, and 19 strikeouts against six walks over 11.2 innings pitched. Bigge made his AAA debut with the Iowa Cubs in 2023.

In 2023, Bigge pitched at the AA level for the Tennessee Smokies, tallying a 3.50 ERA, 3-1 record, and 56 strikeouts against 21 walks over 43.2 innings pitched. He reached the AA level for the first time in 2022.

Pitching for the South Bend Cubs at the high A level in 2022, he notched a 4.82 ERA, 6-2 record, and 47 strikeouts against 24 walks over 37.1 innings. Bigge reached the high A level in 2021 after the 2020 minor league season was canceled due to COVID-19. Bigge made his professional debut in 2019, tallying eight of his nine appearances at the short-season A level.

The Chicago Cubs took Bigge in the 12th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft as the 372nd overall pick.

At Harvard, Bigge helped lead the Crimson to the Ivy League Championship and an appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2019. In 2019, Bigge earned First Team All-Ivy as a designated hitter and Second Team All-Ivy as a starting pitcher.

As a junior in 2019, the Los Gatos, California native posted a 4.58 ERA, 7-2 record, and 76 strikeouts against 36 walks over 74.2 innings pitched. As a batter, he notched a .313 average, seven home runs, and 34 RBIs over 150 at bats as a designated hitter.
