Seger Inks One-Year Deal With Grand Rapids of AHL for 2024-25 Season
ITHACA, N.Y. — The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) announced on Tuesday evening that they have signed former Cornell men’s hockey forward Gabriel Seger ’24 to a one-year contract beginning with the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Seger concluded his two-year tenure with the Big Red this past year producing one of the most productive offensive seasons in 20-plus years, registering a team-high 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists) while playing in all 35 of the Big Red’s games this season. His 0.86 assists per game average ranked 12th nationally and his 1.26 points per game was the 15th-highest clip among Division I skaters.
Being recognized for his offensive success in 2023-24, Seger earned All-ECAC Hockey and All-Ivy First Team honors. He was also honored for his efforts inside the classroom, receiving ECAC Hockey’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Ivy distinctions. At the team’s annual year-end banquet, Seger was also three-time honoree, receiving the Nicky Bawlf Award (Team MVP – as voted on by the team), Crimson Cup (player whose contribution to team was outstanding during season series against Harvard), and Sam Woodside Award (senior player who has most improved in overall playing ability, and exhibited team leadership withplay at Cornell).
The 44-point season was the most by a Cornell player since Ryan Vesce (19-26—45) and the 30 helpers were the most since Stephen Bâby (33), both of which occurred during Cornell’s 2002-03 season that saw it advance to that year’s Frozen Four.
Throughout the year, Seger recorded 12 multi-point games which included pair of four-point games (2-2—4) against Colgate (Dec. 1) and Harvard (March 16), and a trio of three-point games against Brown (2-1—3 on Nov. 4), Clarkson (0-3—3 on Feb. 23), and Dartmouth (0-3—3 on March 22).
Known for his presence inside the faceoff circle, Seger won 58.8 percent of the faceoffs he took, going 488-of-830 at the dot. His 488 faceoff wins ranked fifth nationally and amounted 10-plus faceoff wins in 30 of his 35 appearances. Seger won a season-high 24 faceoffs against Dartmouth on Nov. 10.
During his two years on East Hill, Seger had 74 points (21 goals, 53 assists) in 65 games and concluded his five-year collegiate career — featuring his first three years at Union — with 117 points (35 goals, 82 assists) in 136 career games.
