2V8+ Earns Bronze as Lightweight Rowing Places Fourth at IRA National Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — After three days of racing on Mercer Lake, the Cornell men’s lightweight rowing team placed fourth among the eight-program lightweight field at this year’s 2024 IRA National Championship.

Concluding with 41 points, it is Cornell’s best overall finish for the IRA President’s Cup since tying with Yale for third place at the 2022 IRA National Championship, which was also held on Mercer Lake.

Harvard took home the IRA President’s Cup for the first time since 2017, as the Crimson are tied with Cornell and Columbia for the most times earning the trophy since its inaugural awarding in 2015.

Of the Big Red’s point total, 27 came from its fourth-place finish in the 1V8+ ‘A’ Final, where it clocked a time of 5:45.518. Cornell finished 8.697 seconds behind first-place Harvard’s time of 5:36.821. The Crimson opened the lead in the opening 500 meters and never looked back, posting a 2.587-second victory over Princeton (5:39.408). Penn was the other crew to cross the finish line ahead of the Big Red with its 5:40.484 clip.

Cornell’s other varsity eight entry placed third in the 2V8+ ‘A’ Final to earn the program’s lone medal of the championship. Penn held the lead after the 500-meter mark, but Harvard jumped the Quakers’ shell in between the 500- and 1000-meter marks en route to its first-place victory. The Crimson’s time of 5:46.629 was 3.554 seconds ahead of Penn (5:50.183), while the Big Red’s 5:52.096 time topped Navy (5:52.336) by 24-hundredths of a second for the medal.
