Rickheim Homers, Baseball Falls to Western Carolina in Series Finale, 8-5


CULLOWHEE, N.C. – First-year second baseman Jack Rickheim hit his first career home run, and junior left fielder George Cooper tallied a pair of RBIs, but Harvard University baseball fell to Western Carolina University, 8-5, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Hennon Stadium.
 
Closing out the final game of its spring break trip, the Crimson (2-11) took early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 and pulled within 7-5 in the sixth before the Catamounts (9-9) held on for the decision.
 
Rickheim recorded his first career homer with a two-run shot in the sixth while Cooper finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. Junior center fielder Matt Giberti went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. First-year right-hander Truman Pauley threw 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

  • Senior first baseman Chris Snopek added a hit and an RBI while senior third baseman Jake Berger and junior catcher William Lybrook each tacked on a hit.
  • Senior designated hitter Ben Rounds worked a walk and has now reached base safely in all 13 of the Crimson’s games on the year.
  • First-year right-hander Truman Pauley threw 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
  • Sophomore left-hander Brian Dowling tossed 5.0 innings in the start, permitting seven runs – all earned – on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout.
  • As a team, the Crimson totaled nine hits and four walks. 

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the scoring in the top of the first as Cooper hit an RBI double to left field to plate Giberti. A ground ball from Snopek later brought home Cooper as the Crimson led 2-0 after the top of the first.
  • WCU pulled within 2-1 with a solo homer in the bottom of the first.
  • The Crimson pushed its edge back to two runs at 3-1 in the top of the second as Cooper sent a single through the left side to bring home Rickheim.
  • The Catamounts countered with five runs, including a three-run home run, in the last of the second to move ahead, 6-3. WCU added another run in the bottom of the third with a solo homer to make the score 7-3.
  • Rickheim’s two-run homer to left center cut the margin to 7-5 in the top of the sixth.
  • In the top of the eighth, the Crimson put runners on first and second with two outs before the Catamounts escaped the jam. WCU tacked on an insurance in the last of the eighth with a solo home run.
