VCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game before Jake Bold got the Tigers on the board in the fifth inning with a RBI single up the middle to plate Matt Scannell.
The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth inning via a ground out and three more in the seventh when Aden Hill doubled with the bases loaded to score three unearned runs.
Cade Dressler pitched four shutout innings for VCU with seven strikeouts to earn the save for VCU.
In Game Two, the Tigers built a 3-0 lead through three innings before the Rams rallied.
Jake Koonin got the Tigers going with a RBI double to score Kyle Vinci in the top of the first. In the third, Dylan Zdunek singled to score Koonin. A bases-loaded walk from Jay Mentink added a third run.
The Rams responded in the bottom of the third via a two-run homer off the bat of Brandon Elke. They would tie the game in the sixth inning when William Bean singled through the left side to score another unearned run.
In the eighth, Bean worked another single to score the eventual game-winning run. Nic Ericsson knocked a two-run single to left in the bottom of the eighth to tack on a pair of insurance runs.
Sean Episcope pitched six innings in the Game Two start for the Tigers, striking out seven and allowing just three runs — only two of which were earned.
The four-game series concludes on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
