Papoe Moves Into Round of 16 at ITA Super Regionals for Men’s Tennis
Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. — Junior Radu Papoe picked up the lone win for the Cornell men’s tennis team on Friday afternoon at ITA Super Regionals to move into the round of 16.
Coming in as the No. 2 seeded player in open singles, Papoe matched up with Ivy League foe Henry Ruger from Columbia, winning the first set, 6-3. Ruger would not go away quietly as the senior battled throughout the second. But Papoe pushed through, as Papoe won the second set with a 7-5 decision to slide into the round of 16 and pick up his first victory of the season competing for the Big Red.
Papoe was not the only Big Red athlete competing this afternoon in the Garden State, as Bradley Paliska matched up against Harvard’s Daniel Milavsky. Paliska looked solid early on, winning the first set 6-4. However, Milavsky would regain momentum by winning the second set by a 6-1 margin to force a winner to take all third set. Paliska dueled with Milavsky in the final frame but came up short, losing the set, 5-7, and the match (6-4, 1-6, 5-7).
With his win Friday, Papoe will match up with Princeton’s Ellis Short on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a date to the quarterfinals on the line.
