Home Regatta, Match Race Conference Championship Up This Weekend For Sailing

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell sailing team will look for a second conference title in as many weeks while hosting the MAISA Top 9 as part of the Susan Rogers ’75 Memorial Regatta on Cayuga Lake. The Big Red, which has finished no lower than second in any of its five regattas this fall, will head to Kings Point for the MAISA Match Race Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25.

The Big Red will join seven other squads for the MAISA Match Race Championship, joining Fordham, Georgetown, Hobart and William Smith, Merchant Marine Academy, Navy, Princeton and SUNY Maritime. Cornell will open on Saturday with a matchup against Central New York rival Hobart and William Smith.

The Big Red won the Rogers Memorial regatta last fall, leading wire-to-wire against the top nine teams in the conference. Cornell needed a late Georgetown charge to claim the win. The Big Red led by 48 points after the 10th race, but the Hoyas made a push with seven top five races in its final eight starts. Cornell had enough cushion to win the weekend with 156 points, six points clear of Georgetown.

The regatta is named in honor and remembrance of Susan Rogers, former captain and member of the Cornell sailing team. Women’s sailing was officially recognized by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) in 1967, and Susan was among the first female competitors and leaders pioneering the way for women in the Cornell program. Cornell has won the regatta three of the five times it has been raced back to the 2016-17 campaign, including three of the last four starts.
