Moomey Claims U23 Greco Title, Arujau Falls At Final X To Olympic Medalist
ITHACA, N.Y. — Phillip Moomey of the Cornell wrestling team earned a spot at the U23 World Games and two-time NCAA All-American Vito Arujau put up a strong fight against an Olympic medalist at Final X Stillwater before falling short of making his first national team. Moomey will head to Pontevedra, Spain from Oct. 17-23 to compete for a world title.
The 60kg Greco-Roman title at the U23 Trials will come back to Ithaca and the Spartan Regional Training Center after Moomey swept the series from U20 champion Max Black, winning by fall in the second period in match one, then taking an 8-0 tech fall in the first period in match two. Moomey warmed up with a 9-0 tech fall win over Constantinos Gourgoulianis in the quarters and a pin of Josh Kyle in the semifinals after leading 5-2.
Arujau dropped 12-2 and 13-2 tech falls to the Olympic bronze medalist at Final X, the second straight championship final at the 57kg weight class between the grapplers after also competing at the Trials.
