Bridget Babcock Earns Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. — Cornell women’s lacrosse senior midfielder Bridget Babcock has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

The New Hampshire product comes off a dominant weekend on both offense and defense in the Big Red’s 13-7 victory over the California Golden Bears on Saturday from Schoellkopf Field. On the offensive end, the senior captain found both of her attempted shots find the back of the net, making it the first time Babcock has had a 1.000 shooting percentage since her freshman debut in a three-point performance (2 goals, one assist) against Villanova on Feb. 15, 2020. Babcock also logged an assist in Sunday’s win over the Golden Bears, finding fellow senior captain Caitlin Slaminko for her second goal of the afternoon with seven seconds to go to cap off the Big Red’s sixth-consecutive victory over its West Coast foes.

Babcock would also be a pest for the California offense, flying around the field all afternoon, causing a career-high three turnovers and picking up two ground balls. The senior and the Big Red defense also clamped down on Golden Bears sharpshooter Mya Wang, allowing just one shot on goal that came from a free position attempt. Her final caused turnover of the day proved to be a difference maker, as Babcock stripped Kennedy Goss of possession outside of the right wing and ran it past the clear line to allow the Big Red to call a timeout and reset with 7:01 to go in the fourth. Cornell would eventually score 30 seconds later to take a 10-5 lead and cruise to its fourth consecutive season-opening victory.

Cornell returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 20 for its first of two games over a five-day span when it heads to Ted Grant Field to battle Central New York foe Le Moyne College. The first draw is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on NEC Front Row.
