Macari Slams Two Homers, Softball Closes Home Season With Win Over Harvard

ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior Celia Macari slammed a pair of home runs and the Cornell softball team pounded out a season-high 14 hits in a 10-4 victory over Harvard on Wednesday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red improved to 16-21 (6-12 Ivy), while the Crimson fell to 21-18 (15-6 Ivy).

Macari homered in the third and fourth innings, driving in five of the Big Red’s nine runs over those two innings, to power the Big Red to a win in game three of the series. Emily McKinney was 3-for-3 for a triple, while Avery Wagner (3-for-4) and Olivia Rooney (2-for-3 with a walk) also had multi-hit efforts. Gabrielle Maday went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and four runs in picking up her fifth win of the campaign.

Harvard raced out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and held it until the Big Red put up a for-spot in the third to take the lead for good. Cornell strung together five hits in the frame, cutting the deficit in half on a Maicie Levitt sacrifice fly and, two batters later, taking the lead at 4-2 after Macari’s three-run homer to left-centerfield – her first homer of the season and second of her career.

The Big Red put the game out of reach the following inning with five runs on three hits, a walk and a pair of errors, highlighted by Macari’s second homer in two innings, this time to left. Her two-run shot made it 9-2.

The visitors got two runs back in the sixth, but Maday settled down and retired the Crimson in the seventh after they put runners on second and third with one out, keeping the scoreline where it was after McKinney scored on a wild pitch after tripling with one out in sixth. Her long shot hit the top of the wall and bounced back into the field of play as she ran the bases for her second career triple.

Cornell will close the regular season with this weekend’s three-game series at Dartmouth. The Big Red and Big Green will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7 at 12:30 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday, May 8 with first pitch at 12:30 p.m.
