Texas student-athletes set to receive additional financial support

AUSTIN, Texas — Beginning with the 2022 spring semester, The University of Texas will provide its student-athletes with additional financial assistance based on recent changes in NCAA and Big 12 legislation, related to the Supreme Court’s decision in Alston v. NCAA. The Alston decision, which came in September, granted universities the opportunity to provide student-athletes with additional education-related benefits and direct financial support in the form of academic achievement awards, up to the legally established maximum of $5,980 per year.

“We’re excited to be able to provide our student-athletes with additional support, but as importantly, to continue to initiate programs that focus on their academic commitment and success,” said UT Vice President and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte. “Our student‐athletes have a wonderful opportunity to engage in a world‐class academic experience while pursuing athletic excellence at the highest level.”

“We take a holistic approach to the academic and athletic experience while steadfastly encouraging our student-athletes to pursue meaningful and beneficial course work, and to be involved in our enrichment programs like 4EVER TEXAS and LEVERAGE, as they train for excellence in their sports. This additional academic benefit will be another way to bring out the very best in our student-athletes. I can’t thank President Jay Hartzell and our campus leadership enough for helping us make this happen.”

Following the court’s ruling, Texas Athletics has worked with campus leaders to develop a plan and establish criteria to provide education-related benefits and academic achievement awards to scholarship student-athletes through the Academic Enhancement Benefits program.

Eligible Longhorn student-athletes are set to receive an academic achievement award of $2,990 beginning with the 2022 spring semester. The student-athletes will be able to earn the academic achievement award during the fall and spring semesters going forward, for a total of $5,980 each academic year. The additional academic benefits will be awarded after review and confirmation of academic progress and program engagement.
